Crimes related to flora species involves the illicit trade as well possession of species covered by CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), as well as any other species protected under national law. Under the Index, to account for the plethora of species across the African continent, the ‘top three’ most illicitly traded flora species in each country are considered, including high and low value timber such as rosewood, roundwood and mahogany, as well as cycads.
